Choosing the route
Do you need custom software at all?
What does Dev Moves build?
We build custom software, web apps, customer portals, online shops, CRM and ERP tools, databases and system links. We also build WordPress sites. We use a ready-made shop platform when it is the better fit.
Is bespoke software always the best answer?
No. If a product already fits how you work, use it. A custom build makes sense when the workarounds, duplicate entry or missing rules have become part of the job. We will say when the cheaper product is good enough.
Can you connect the systems we already use?
Yes. We link accounts, shops, delivery, CRM and in-house systems. An API or set file swap can move the data. The aim is simple. Enter it once and keep the same record in step.
Can you replace an old system without stopping the business?
Yes. We write down the old rules, move and test the data, then replace the system in small parts. Each part can be checked. We do not default to one large Monday morning switch.
Scope and cost
How we agree the cost
How much does bespoke software cost?
The scope sets the cost. Screens and user roles matter. Moving old data, linking other systems and unusual rules often matter more. We write down the work, then put a fixed price against it.
Do you work to a fixed price?
Yes, when the scope is clear. If there are too many unknowns, we split the work into phases. We price the first phase before it starts.
What do you need from us before scoping?
Show us how the work happens now. Bring the spreadsheet, old screens and the task someone fixes by hand. You do not need a full technical brief before you speak to us.
Can a large build be split into phases?
Yes. The first phase should solve one useful part of the problem. It must work on its own. Later phases can add the next task, team or system link.
Build and handover
Who owns the code
Who owns the source code?
It depends on the build. If we create a new codebase for you, you own that code and its documentation. If the project uses our Zeus Laravel CMS, Dev Moves keeps ownership of Zeus and licenses it to you. We package the project-specific frontend separately, and you own it. Reusing Zeus lowers the build cost because the core platform already exists.
Can another developer take over later?
Yes. The code, database plan and notes go with the project. A skilled developer should be able to understand it and carry on. We do not keep a new codebase closed.
Do you support software after launch?
Yes. We can maintain the system, fix faults and add to it. The handover lists what you own, what is licensed and what support covers. You can take a new codebase elsewhere. A Zeus build keeps its CMS licence terms.
What technology do you use?
Most custom systems use PHP, Laravel and MySQL. We add tools such as React, Vue or Alpine when the screen needs them. The stack follows the job. We choose tools another developer can support.
Websites and platforms
When to use a ready-made platform
Do you build WordPress websites?
Yes. WordPress suits sites a team needs to edit often. We build the theme around the business and keep plugins under control. If the site is really a software product, we suggest a different route.
Should my shop use Shopify or WooCommerce?
Most shops should start with a ready-made platform. Shopify and WooCommerce work well when their product, payment and delivery rules fit. Custom ecommerce is for the rules they cannot handle well.
Do you work with Magento?
Yes, for shops that need its product and trade tools. Magento is heavy software. Many firms do not need it. We can build on it, support it or plan a move to a lighter platform.
Where is Dev Moves based?
We are based in Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Local clients can meet us in person, while most of the build can run by phone and video. We work with businesses across the UK.
The services these questions are about: bespoke software development, web application development, bespoke databases and API integration services.
